Effie Jane Hicks, 94, of Iaeger, WV, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2019 in Welch Community Hospital, Welch, WV.
Effie was born August 1, 1925, on Keene Mountain near Marvin, VA, a daughter of the late Dave and Sarah Horne Keene. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for over 60 years and enjoyed attending church when she could. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, reading and watching CNN. Effie was a custodian at
Iaeger Elementary School and retired in 1989. She was the last surviving member of her original family.
In addition to her parents, Dave and Sarah Keene, Effie was preceded in death by her husband Walter Hicks, one grandson, Danny Kennedy Jr.; four sisters, Ada Wimmer, Pearlie Mullins, Gladys Mullins, and Pinkie Patton; five brothers, Ballard, Lucian, Otis, Estil and Ira Keene; two infant sisters and an infant brother.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Hicks and Elizabeth of Beartown and Randall Hicks and Teresa of Pineville; one daughter Geraldine Kennedy and Danny of Iaeger; seven grandchildren, Jerry Dean Hicks and Jessica, Gregory Hicks, Kimberly Pruitt and William, Kristy Crutchfield and Shawn, Derek Riffe, Justin Hicks and Jordan Clark and Beau, seven great grandchildren, Cori Jarrett and Brandon, Chloe Hicks, Brian and Kandice Pruitt, Alex and Ethan Hicks and Riley Burton; one very special niece, who was raised as her sister, Betty Shortridge of Elkins Branch, VA; and numerous additional nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved dearly.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 11o’clock with Elder Jack Horn, Elder Travis Davis, and Elder Aaron Williams officiating at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV. Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens on Bluefield/Tazewell Road in Bluefield, VA.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jerry Dean Hicks, Gregory, Alex, and Justin Hicks, Derek Riffe, Brian Pruitt, Shawn Crutchfield, Darrell Payne, Joey Osborne, and Mike Auville. Honorary pallbearers will be Von Keen, Ronnie Keen, Ed Osborne, Russ Smith, Chan Smith and Joe Ford. Flower bearers will be Ethan Hicks and Riley Burton.
Friends may visit with the family Saturday evening, October 19, 2019 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV.
