BECKLEY – Four Westside Renegades scored in double figures Thursday evening to lead
their team to a 74-59 Class AA Region III Section 1 tournament title over the Independence
Patriots at the Raleigh County Convention Center.
The Renegades will entertain the loser of tonight’s Bluefield-Shady Spring Sectional final
next Thursday, with a trip to the following week’s boys’ state tourney going to that game’s
winner.
Independence will take on the winner of the Bluefield-Shady game in the other Co-final
Thursday, with the victor of that game also drawing a state tournament bid.
Juniors Ethan Blackburn and Daniel Reed paced Westside with 25 and 20 points respectively,
while fellow juniors Tommy Milam added 12 and Jace Colucci contributed 10.
The two competitors were tied at 14 at the end of the first period and at 32 at intermission
before the Renegades outscored Independence 42-27 in the second half for their 14th win of
the season in 24 starts.
Sophomore Michael McKinney led the Pats with 25 points, along with 10 by senior Jared Cannady.
Independence is now 14-9 on the campaign.
