TEN YEARS AGO

March 11, 2010

•Hannah Elizabeth Puckett, celebrated her birthday on Wednesday March 10, 2010. She is the daughter of Wesley and Libby Puckett of Atwell. Hannah will celebrate her birthday with a party at her Uncle Bert and Aunt Dal and Cousin TT’s house in Raysal.

•Members from the Welch Fire Department and Welch Police Department responded to a train derailment in Maitland, this morning. Apparently the Northfolk and Southern train was pushing coal cars and when it stopped, the coal cars broke loose, derailing on the derailment track which caused it to land on it’s side. The train was loaded with coal at the time of derailment.  There were no injuries to report. The derailment is still under investigation. 

TWENTY YEARS AGO

March 11, 2000

•Attorney Ronald D. Hassan officially announced on Thursday that the $20 million law suit filed in the Circuit Court of McDowell County in December has been settled. The suit filed by Hassan and Williamson attorney H. Truman Chafin, on behalf of Raymond Neal Rose and three other plaintiff’s involving three State Troopers has been settled for $ 1 million. 

•Garnet Edwards has successfully completed the Basic Assessment Training Course held in Charleston on February 23-25. This training requirement completes Level 1 as mandated by West Virginia Code, 

THIRTY YEARS AGO

March 11, 1990

•J.T. Haun, son of John and Doris Haun of Elbert, will be three years old on March 12, 1990. John will celebrate his birthday at home with his sisters Crystal, Tabitha and LeeAnn.

•Kayla Marie Rotenberry, turned three years old on March 9, 1990. She is the daughter of Charles and Juanita Rotenberry of Carswell Hollow. Paternal grandparents are Junior and Ruth Rotenberry of Carswell Hollow and Maternal grandparents are Onnie and Alice Belcher of Superior.  Kayla will celebrate at home family and friends.. 

FORTY YEARS AGO

March 11, 1980

•Joseph Ezekiel (ZEKE) Woods, son of Gloria and Grady Woods of Kimball, celebrated his third birthday on Sunday March 9 1980. His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Carl E. Robinson and Mrs. Trannie Woods all of Kimball. Helping ZEKE celebrate were his brothers, Grady and Brady, age four and Ricky age eleven. 

•Magan Odle, celebrated her third birthday on Sunday, March 9, with a family partyat her home. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Odle of Coalwood. Paternal grandparents are the late Mr. and Mrs. Ed Odle of Coalwood. Maternal grandparents are Mr.and Mrs. W. T. Davis Jr. of Bradshaw. Magan has one sister Malia, who is five.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

March 11, 1970

•Roderfield boy wins Daily News circulation prize. A 14-year old youth who rides minibikes for a hobby was the winner of the Welch Daily News circulation drive prize this week. Raymond K. Comer walked away with $25 in cash when his name was drawn from the list of carriers involved in the current circulation campaign in the county.

•A Iaeger Doctor named by State Welfare Officials as one of 10 who may have overcharged in medical payments under the Medicaid Program today declared he had “done nothing wrong” and invited both State and Federal Officials to “to check my books anytime.” Dr. E. K. Whitley Jr. who is a canidate for McDowell County Court in the May primary, declared that information supplied by Welfare Commissioner Edwin Flower was “news to me.”
