High school basketball in West Virginia is officially on hold after a decision Thursday by the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission (WVSSAC), In conjunction with the state Health Department and Governor Jim Justice to
suspend the Girls’ State Tournament after only nine of twenty-one games had been played, and to postpone the Class AA boys’ regional games and the Boys’ State Tournament that was slated to begin next Wednesday.
After an initial announcement to that effect, WVSSAC Executive Director Bernie Dolan addressed the media at the Charleston Convention Center Coliseum Thursday and answered questions after making a statement about the current hold.
The action was taken because of the pandemic of the coronavirus and as a precautionary measure to protect the health of participants and fans at the tournaments state-wide.
The following message was posted on the wvssac.org website after those actions were announced:
ALL AA BOYS REGIONAL GAMES ARE POSTPONED AND THE GIRLS STATE TOURNAMENT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
