TEN YEARS AGO, March 23, 2010

•Mt. View Middle and High School opened it’s doors to welcome Bonita (Brogdon) Mitchell of CASE WV. to teach students about abstinence. Mitchell is the Coordinator for the (CBAE) Community Based Abstinance Education Program.

TWENTY YEARS AGO, March 23, 2000

•Chandler Cole Koger, celebrated his first birthday Wednesday, March 22, 2000. He is the son of LJ and Sherrie Koger of Carswell Hollow, Kimball. A Teletubbies party will be given at Big Sandy Church of God Annex with family and friends to celebrate this special day. 

•Wednesday afternoon around 1:20 p.m. after officials became aware of a bomb threat, the students at the Switchback Elementary School were evacuated and sent home. Sheriff’s Deputies, the West Virginia State Police and School Officials, searched the entire premises of the school, but no explosive device was found. 

THIRTY YEARS AGO, March 23, 1990

•Ashley Nikole Burks, celebrated her first birthday on March 1, 1990. She is the daughter of Deborah Burks of Carswell. Her maternal grandparents are King and Judith Burks of Carswell Hollow. Ashley celebrated with a Care Bear party with family and friends.

•Ebonie Ka-Marra Lane, celebrated her fifth birthday on March 21, Known to  family and friends as “ Chocolate.” She is the daughter of Pamela Lane and the late William Lane of Hemphill. “Chocolate” is the granddaughter of William and Laura Vaughn also of Hemphill and Ella Lane and the late James Lane of Maybeury, The birthday girl will celebrate today with cake and ice cream. 

FORTY YEARS AGO, March 23, 1980

•Jamie Eugene Carbaugh, celebrated his first birthday on Saturday, March 22,  He is the son of Linda (Carbaugh) Milam, and the stepson of Dee Milam Jr. His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Carbaugh of Welch.

•Angela Marie Hicks celebrated her second birthday on Saturday March 22. She is the daughter of David and Donna Hicks of Coalwood. She is pictured with her brother Matthew David who is 5 1/2 months old. Angela will celebrate at home with family and friends.

FIFTY YEARS AGO, March 23, 1970

•Randall Cregger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cregger of Havaco was given a party on his 13th birthday. Guest included David Darby, Jackie Petus, Steven Stroupe, David Stroupe, Suzy Stroupe, Johnny Stumbo, Rhonda Stroupe, Ricky Stroup, Rocky Carter, Bobby Carter, Bill Carter, Paul Stumbo, Mr.and Mrs. Larry Petus, and Mrs. Richard Stroupe.

•Two McDowell County firms were targets of burglars this weekend and State Police said both incidents appeared to be the work of professional burglars. Entered was the Island Creek Store at Keystone and the Lambert and Beavers Packing House at Squire. Officers said several thousand dollars worth of merchindice were taken from the two concerns.
