Phillip Estep was born April 10, 1944 in Bradshaw WV. He went to be with the Lord on April 21, 2020 making his stay on earth 76 years and 11 days. Phillip was born to the late Harvey and Pearly Estep.
Phillip married Joann Thornsbury Estep on March 6, 1970. To this union was born one daughter, Teresa Louise Estep of Jolo, WV and two sons, Phillip Benjamin Estep and wife Angel Hamilton Estep of Wharton, WV and Christopher Harvey Estep and late wife Melissa Aralds Estep of War, WV.
Also surviving Phillip are four grandchildren, Joshua Aaron Estep and Madeline Grace Estep both of Wharton, WV, Phillip Thomas Estep of War, WV, and Lillian Renee Estep of Wharton, WV; and two grandchildren of his heart, Angel Marie Stacy and Matthew Earl Stacy both of Paynesville, WV. Phillip also leaves behind two brothers, Ricky Estep, and wife Nila and Gary Estep and wife Cathy Ann all of Jolo: four sisters, Brenda Wolford and husband Lee, Lois Estep, Cathy and Genny Estep all of Jolo, WV. Also, he leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Preceding him in death are two brothers, Aldie and Gene Autry; two sisters, Opal Sue, and Marty Delsie; and one special great nephew, Jacob Harvey Hagerman, who’s heart misses him no more.
Phillip was baptized on November 8, 1971 by Elders Hassell Estep and Claude Conn at Slate Creek, VA. Phillip was a faithful member of the Old Regular Baptist for 48 years, 5 months and 11 days, with his membership at Old Samariah Church in Groundhog Hollow, WV. He served as clerk, assistant moderator, and moderator of different churches, and was the moderator of the Old Friendship Association for 8 years, 7 months and 25 days.
Phillip joined the Army Branch of the US Military. He was a tank driver in the 69th Armor Division, 2nd Infantry at the rank of Spec.4. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 175.
Phillip worked in the coal mines for 25 years for Island Creek Coal Company. He worked as a tipple mechanic but was also a certified electrician, a first-class mine foreman and a certified EMT. He was a member of Local Union 1509 until his death.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 24, 2020 at 1 o’clock at the Dave Estep Cemetery on Estep Ridge near Jolo, with burial to follow. Family, friends, and neighbors will serve as pallbearers.
