Former Monongah High School

By Gary Dove  WN Sports Writer

I have a hobby of visiting former or current high schools in West Virginia.

I think it is so interesting that some schools were the home to some students for their entire scholastic journey, from kindergarten through high school.

As the old saying goes, “If these walls could talk.”

With the slow pace of sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m taking this opportunity to post some of these pictures, along with a comment or two about each.

First up is the former Monongah High School in Marion County.  This school is the alma mater of University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban.

The school ceased being a high school in 1979 and was one of four schools that combined to form North Marion High School.  The other three were Barrackville, Fairview and Mannington.  Farmington also figured into that mix, but it had ceased existence after burning down in 1975.

The Monongah sports teams were known as the Lions.
