GARY, W.Va. – The Gary City Police Department will host a bicycle safety fair on Saturday, June 27th to help area children avoid injuries while riding.
“We had a woman calling 911 reporting kids in Gary riding bicycles without helmets,” said Gary Police Chief S. P. “Pat” McKinney. “I remembered Mayor Reba Honaker hosting a bicycle event in Welch once. Taking a cue from her, I asked the Mayor and council if we could do one in Gary and
they readily agreed. “
The event will feature Thomas Bell, an area Driving Instructor, giving safety tips and explaining hand signals. Free pizza will be available courtesy of Welch Pizza Hut and free bicycle helmets from the Turner New law firm in Beckley.
“I need all Gary area parents to call in their children’s name and helmet size so we can try and get them a helmet by the event. We will get any we miss at the event one as soon as possible,” McKinney said. “I am also excited the Gary Volunteer Fire Department and staff from the Welch News will be on hand to help with the event.”
The bicycle safety fair will be held on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, please call Gary City Hall at 304-448-2209.
