RONALD “HOP” NEWTON HOPKINS SR.

Ronald “Hop” Newton Hopkins Sr. of Landgraff, WV. departed his life surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 16, 2020. Better know as “Hop” he was born March 21, 1947 in Welch, WV. and was the son of the late Robert Lee Hopkins and Myrtle Elizabeth Burks Hopkins.

Hop was a 1965 graduate of Kimball High School. Upon graduation, he immediately joined the United States Air Force, then drafted to the Vietnam War. He served from May 6, 1966 to February 8, 1975. After retiring from the Military, he worked for the Refine Sugar Corp. in Yonkers, NY. where he also retired in 1992. He returned home to Northfork, WV to care for his parents. Hop became very active in the community and schools serving as a father figure to many. He was a member of the Emmanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church in Norwood/Kimball, WV.

Other than his parents, Hop was preceded in death by two sisters, Gerline Cheeks and Rosetta Hopkins. Special niece, Glendora Woodson and his beloved granddaughter, Starasia Lewis.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Priscilla Hopkins. His children; Wayne Hopkins and wife Tamara, Marcelino “Mas” Edwards and wife Scherrie Edwards. Makiba Hopkins, Sharonnia Osayaba and husband Babatu Osayaba. Robert “Monty” Hopkins, Ronald “Stretch” Hopkins and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Hopkins. Special grandchildren; De Moni Edwards, Chri’ Shay Hopkins, and Na’ Chonte Miller. Hop was also blessed with 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren as well as a host of aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, very special friends, Shirley Merriweather, Rev. Williams “Bum Bum” Spencer and Donald “Zeke” Hairston.

Graveside services will be held Monday, June 22, 2020 at the Rest Haven Cemetery Mausoleum with Rev. William Spencer officiating at 12: Noon. Military Honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Social Distancing and mask recommended.
