NEW RICHMOND – Wyoming East battled the visiting Nicholas County Grizzlies on even terms through three and one half quarters Friday evening before a safety midway through the final frame spelled doom for the Warriors 16-14.
East took a 7-0 advantage early in the opening frame when senior Caleb Bower rumbled 41 yards for the contest’s opening points and Jacob Riling booted the conversion.

The Grizzlies answered with seven of their own after Jacob Williams found the end zone from 17 yards out and junior Brayden Short kicked the extra point.
East led 14-7 at intermission, with Bower adding an 18 yard TD run late in the second, again followed by Riling’s PAT kick.
Nicholas QB Jordan McKinney knotted the count at 14 on a 17 yard burst only 1:08 after the half, along with Short’s boot.
Playing in the shadow of their own goal post in the fourth, tragedy struck with 6:25 remaining when an East ball carrier was tackled in his own end zone for a Grizzly safety, and what proved to be the deciding points in an 16-14 Nicholas win.
Bower finished his evening’s work with 25 rushes for 195 yards, as the Warriors dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
East will travel to Greenbrier East Friday evening.
The Grizzlies are 1-1 with their win.
