Nicholas County Knocks Off Westside In Overtime

SUMMERSVILLE – The Nicholas County Grizzlies claimed a 34-26 overtime win over visiting Westside Friday evening in a Class AA thriller.
The game, that featured three ties and one lead change, went to OT after the Renegades scored on a hook-and-lateral play with one second remaining in regulation that knotted the score at 26.

Nicholas County led 26-20 as the fourth quarter clock wound down when Westside junior Blake Goode passed on the outside to senior end Spencer Kenney, who then flipped the pigskin to a trailing Daniel Reed, who finished the play to produce the final tie.
The Grizzlies improved to 2-4 with the victory, while Westside evened its slate at 2-2.
Goode staked the Renegades to a 6-0 first quarter lead, the only one of the game for Westside, with a four yard run for a TD less than three minutes into the contest.
The passing combo of Dawson Brown-to-Garrett Kesterson connected for a pair of second frame scores to push the Grizzlies to a 14-6 intermission advantage.
The first came on a 35 yard Brown toss to Kesterson to knot the count at 6 before the duo hooked up on a 10 yard scoring play with under a minute left in the initial half to go on top 14-6 following Brown’s PAT pass to Jeff Girod.
Nicholas maintained that lead, as neither team could find the end zone in the third.
The final dozen minutes saw five six-pointers scored, three by Westside and a pair by the Grizzlies.
The Renegades pulled to within two, at 14-12, on a Goode two yard scamper.
Quarterback Jordan McKinney answered with a one yard jaunt to push the NC advantage to 20-12 before Goode scored for the third time in the contest, followed by a Goode conversion run to tie the score at 20 with 2:30 showing in regulation.
Caleb Clark nudged the Grizzlies back into the lead with 25 seconds left in the fourth on a 5 yard run before the Westside hook-and-lateral score to send the contest into OT.
Goode finished his evening’s work with 108 yards rushing on 24 carries, in addition to scoring three times, adding an extra points run and completing a pass that tied the game at the end of regulation.
Jacob Williams scored on a 4 yard burst in OT, followed by a Clark PAT run to give Nicholas the 34-26 victory.
The Renegades were scheduled to visit River View this Friday, but the COVID-19 Metrics map has sidelined Westside for this week.
