Gridiron Grizzly

Where did the 2020 high school regular football season go in Wet Virginia as we move into the final weekend of the regular campaign?
For the Wyoming County schools it really didn’t go anywhere, but rather was a victim of the coronavirus pandemic. Wyoming East was able to play only five of ten scheduled games and Westside got in but four of ten planned games on the card.
When one or another of those schools weren’t sidelined due to exposure in their respective houses of higher learning, they were benched due to a high rate of cases in the County, thus turning the Metrics Map from green or yellow to gold or even red, stopping both teams.
McDowell County has fared much better as well as diagnosed cases county-wide, and contagion in each school, coupled with a lot of hard work by the athletic administrations of both Mount View and River View to rustle up games most every week.
This evening’s Sherman at River View game will be the ninth for the Raiders, out of ten scheduled at the beginning of the season and the Summers County at Mount View contest will be the Knights’ tenth game, after only having nine scheduled.
Moving forward, the 2020 season will be remembered as much for its uncertainty and tumultuous nature as would be a season if all four area teams made the playoffs, just not with the same warmth.
Last week and earlier this one, Gridiron Grizzly went 2-2 to bring his season slate to 25-12, or 67.6 percent.
Looking at this weekend’s games, the Bear foresees:
SUMMERS COUNTY 28 MOUNT VIEW 12
A second win of the season for the Bobcats over the Golden Knights.
SHERMAN 30 RIVER VIEW 8
The Raiders come up short at home versus the Tide.
In college play:
WVU 31 TEXAS 30
A tall order on the road for the Mountaineers, but Grizz sees a victory.
MARSHALL 42 UMASS 10
No problem here for the undefeated Herd.
VIRGINIA TECH 24 LIBERTY 21
This one should be a dandy in Blacksburg.
