With the opening round of the 2020 West Virginia High School football playoffs in the books, more or less, it’s time to look forward to this weekend’s quarterfinal round.
The reason for the “more or less” qualification is the dozen games, of twenty-four scheduled, that weren’t played due to red or orange classifications on the covid-19 Metrics Map, forcing twelve schools to be unable to participate in games and allowing their opponents to advance to the quarterfinals.
Gridiron Grizzly didn’t count the games that weren’t played.
For the contests that were played, the Bear was 12-3 last week, including a perfect 3-0 in the colleges and a like record in Class AAA playoff games. His slate was 4-1 in Class AA and 2-2 in Class A.
On the season, the Grizz’s mark is 38-18, or 67.9 percent.
Looking at this week’s pairings, the Bear says:
CLASS AAA
CABELL MIDLAND 28 SPRING MILLS 13
SOUTH CHARLESTON 35 PRINCETON 22
MUSSELMAN 23 SPRING VALLEY 18
MARTINSBURG 30 BRIDGEPORT 17
CLASS AA
BLUEFIELD 42 NORTH MARION 20
OAK GLEN 31 HERBERT HOOVER 21
FAIRMONT 36 INDEPENDENCE 14
ELKINS 30 ROBERT C. BYRD 23
CLASS A
GREENBRIER WEST 28 RITCHIE COUNTY 13
PENDLETON COUNTY 21 TYGARTS VALLEY 8
ST. MARYS 19 MIDLAND TRAIL 16
EAST HARDY 23 TOLSIA 16
It’s sparse pickin’ in the colleges this week as WVU has a scheduled bye week before Oklahoma and Iowa State and the scheduled Marshall-Charlotte game has been postponed.
PITT 25 VIRGINIA TECH 21
The winner here depends on which Virginia Tech team shows up, or which Pitt team shows, for that matter.
