David Forrest Powell age 55 of Princeton, WV; formerly of Kyle, WV who departed this life on Saturday, December 12, 2020 in Roanoke, VA.
David was born October 18, 1965 in Welch, WV to Phyllis Powell of Gary, WV. He graduated from Northfork High School and joined the US Army and later the US Navy. After completing his duties to his Country, David received an honorable discharge and returned home to begin enjoying his retirement.
David loved the Lord and was baptized in Jesus name and received the Holy Ghost at Midway Shiloh Temple in Keystone, WV, under the leadership of the late Bishop B. T. Jones. After years of worshipping at other churches, he rejoined Midway Shiloh Temple in 2019 at the Church’s Homecoming under the leadership of Pastor John Hale. David enjoyed helping others. He enjoyed cooking and his specialty was fried cauliflower and broccoli casserole. Also, he enjoyed bowling, bingo and singing. David’s favorite song was “God Is My Everything.” He was a member of the New Direction Choir.
Over time, his health began to interfere with his activities, but he remained active for as long as he was able. He loved his family, as he had 17 nieces and nephews; many cousins, aunts and uncles. He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his mother and grandmother, who were his number one girls. He would often say, “I am the First and the Oldest Grandchild.”
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers: Joseph Powell Sr., Ralph Washington Sr., and four uncles: Joseph Powell Jr., Jesse Younger, Henry Thompson, and Ernest Harris Jr., and his cousin, Dwight “Bird” Miller.
David will truly be missed by his family and friends; as he leaves to cherish his memory: his loving mother, Phyllis Powell whom he loved very dearly; his grandmother, Margaret Powell Washington of Princeton, WV and his four sisters: Katina (Paul) Mitchell of Queens, NY, Thomasina (Harold) Jones of Bluefield, WV, Rochelle (Lamont) Jeffries of Salisbury, NC and Audra (Troy) Graves of Jamestown, NC; three uncles: Jeffrey (Jenell) Powell of Atlanta, GA, Terry (Donna) Powell of Charleston, WV and Jerry (Delcenia) Powell of Columbus, OH; six aunts: Betty Younger of Upland, WV, Carol Thompson of Brooklyn, NY, Karen Harris of Princeton, WV, Deborah Powell of Kyle Bottom, WV, and The Elder Audray Powell of Charleston, WV. His extended family, Lorretta Helm (Powell) and Family of both Ohio and Kyle Bottom; Vickie and Victor Helm and Brenda (Morris) Marshall (whom he referred to as his wife.) Although David did not have any biological children, he had two people in his life he considered as his sons, Landan Helm and Winston DeHart (Riddle). Two special cousins, Karina DeHart and Jada Powell. David’s Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Midway-Shiloh Temple in Keystone, with Pastor John Hale eulogist and Pastor Timothy Hairston presiding. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 6605 New Hope Road in Bluewell, WV, where military rites will be conducted by the WV Honor Guard. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., until the time of Service. His nephews, nieces and cousins will serve as both pallbearers and flower bearers.
