MCDOWELL COUNTY, W.Va. – Throughout the week, the McDowell County Board of Education will hold public comment hearings at three elementary schools to discuss potential closure and consolidation.
Starting Tuesday, March 23rd, a meeting will be held at Fall River Elementary School in Big Sandy starting at 6:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 24th, a meeting will be held at Kimball Elementary School starting at 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, March 25th will be the final meeting, taking place at Welch Elementary School and also starting at 6:00 p.m.
At this time, funding hasn’t been received to build a new school to house students from the three subject to closure. Instead, the Board seeks to gain public input on the process. The primary reason given is the age of the three schools, having served students in the area for many years.
All meetings will be subject to a mandatory mask requirement and social distancing will be observed. While the state of West Virginia is under a Safer at Home Order, the public may attend the meeting virtually via live audio feed using the following link: https://boe.mcdo.k12.wv.us/Page/4616.
