IAEGER, W.Va. – Mike Mitchem, Member of the McDowell County Board of Education has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2022.

Mike has served the public for twenty-two years. He has served as President of the McDowell Board of Education and President of the West Virginia School Board Association.

“My decision to not run was difficult but my wife and I plan to retire and move next to our sons in Fredericksburg, VA, perhaps within the next four years,” said Mitchem. “I think it is important for the people of McDowell County to have their voice be heard and elect who they want to represent them for the next four years.”

Mike first ran in 1998 and was re-elected through 2012 in which he resigned to seek the office of Sixth Senatorial District. He sought the Board of Education again in 2014.

“It’s been an honor to serve the children, parents and staff of McDowell County.   We have so many of our students make great and everlasting contributions to our area and nation,” said Mitchem. “I have also met some wonderful professionals, in both Board members and staff, and was honored to contribute to the successes we have seen throughout the years.”
