Tomorrow, Saturday, February 26th, 2022, will mark the 50th Anniversary of the mining disaster that devastated the Buffalo Creek Hollow of Logan County after three coal slurry impoundment ponds broke following several days of pouring rains.
Figures listed in Wikipedia about the disaster show 125 people killed in the Buffalo Creek Valley and 1121 people injured.
Over 132 million US gallons of sludge and water flowed down the valley, leaving over 4000 people homeless in its path.
An in-depth article with interviews of survivors and officials who worked in the aftermath of the flood, along with several pictures will be published in Monday’s edition of The Welch News.
