Four New State Champions Crowned In Boys’ Basketball

CHARLESTON – Four new state boys’ basketball champions were crowned on Saturday at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

In the second year of the four class system, Morgantown held off Parkersburg South in the Class AAAA contest by a 56-53 count to give Head Coach David Tallman his second state championship with the Mohigans.

Morgantown also won the title in 2016.

Fairmont spoiled Shady Spring’s hopes of a repeat in AAA, winning on a last second deuce to capture a 60-59 decision and the championship.

The Polar Bears won the 2017 crown in AA and claimed the AAA title in 1996.

Poca dropped Bluefield 65-48 in the Class AA match to win its third state boys’ title, also winning all the marbles in 2015 and 1997.

The James Monroe Mavericks won their first state boys’ crown with a convincing 72-47 win over Greater Beckley Christian in the Class A title game.

The Mavs finish as the only unbeaten team for the campaign with a 28-0 slate.
